I only entered one competition with my book. Either the bigger, more established awards wouldn't even accept a book from a small publisher or the awards were so clearly bogus they weren't worth paying to enter. Seems like there are more and more of the "pay to play" competitions around lately.

I received an award for my first book "Worth More Than Rubies" through Faithwriters.com. The book had been submitted to them for review. I had no idea they gave out awards and was pleasantly surprised. I had the logo put on the back cover on my second print run and put it up on the book website.

Book awards for nonfiction titles can be very useful, especially for marketing your book. There is a giant list of book awards and competitions for published authors here. Each award has its own rules and value, but any award is a plus. You can use the award and put it on your blogs, email signatures, book cover, etc. It really does lend credibility to you as an author.
