Carl David is the third generation of a four-generation family art business in Philadelphia. He is the author of Collecting & Care of Fine Art published by Crown in 1981. His article about Martha Walter, an American Impressionist painter (1875-1976), was published in the American Art Review in May 1978 Mr. David's new book, Bader Field, embodies the emotional story of a son's loving relationship with his father—a legendary art dealer whose life is suddenly taken by a massive coronary at the young age of fifty-eight years. His death plunges the twenty-four-year-old man onto the front lines of the family art business, which he had entered a mere three years prior. Battling with his own grief while trying to help his adoring but fragile mother survive, David forges forward with all of the elemental tools his father imparted to him. His journey proves a difficult one, not having yet recovered from the horrific loss of his brother to suicide just eight years earlier when he was found dead on the fourth floor of the Rittenhouse Square townhouse, which was home to the prestigious David David Gallery. His self-imposed obligation is to successfully take the family art business to the next generation and to give his own children every bit of love, kindness, and wisdom bestowed upon him by the unique man whom they will never know other than the mark he left on everyone who knew him. Bader Field adds significant insight into the mysterious workings and dealings of the art world. David speaks from experience of having been immersed in it all of his life and having lived it from the inside out. There will be a tremendous crossover interest in this book as it combines the elements of an American family, its goodness and its tragedy interfaced with the multifaceted aspects of the art business and flying small airplanes. Bader Field in Atlantic City was the oldest airfield in the country. With little sophistication, its two asphalt runways juggled single and twin engine aircraft exuded a character and charm that created memories to last a lifetime. That is where this saga begins and where it ends as life comes full circle.

A.C.'s forgotten airport
Bader plans abandoned as gambling town struggles

By JASON NARK
Philadelphia Daily News

narkj@phillynews.com 856-779-3231

ON A CLEAR night, the gleaming towers of Atlantic City casinos never looked as vibrant and alive as they did from 1,000 feet up, inside the cockpit of a plane approaching Bader Field.

Bader, a small airport that operated on a 142-acre parcel in Atlantic City's back bay for almost a century before closing in 2006, is practically in walking distance… Continue

"Bader Field" Newspaper Feature

"Bader Field" by Carl David will be featured in the Philadelphia Daily News this Saturday, April 11, 2009!

I actually met the journalist and newspaper photographer at Bader Field in Atlantic City where I was photographed at the end of the now defunct runway, holding up a copy of the book. Afterward the interview continued as the answers to the questions painted a picture of the grander purpose of the book.

If you can't get a hard copy of the newspaper, you can still read the story by going to… Continue

My guess is that it could have been one of his students since he was teaching at that time as well. Or, someone copied it as an exercise and also added his name?

Hello Again, Carl,
Yes, I think that woud be interesting (keeping in touch), I look forward to it.
I read the background to Bader Field (what a great history. I once looked over the American wartime airfields in Suffolk here in the UK; didn't need much imagination to people them again with young voices and the sounds and smell of another mission taking off) and I'm sure your father is pround of you. And he left you as a writer a pefect gift: your last sight of him on an old airfield.
Good luck with sales.
More best wishes - Peter.

Thank you for joining our site. Have a great weekend. I read the information about your book and it is intriguing. When I practiced law I had several clients who were art dealers and they would travel around the country with their pieces of art in private planes selling them to other galleries. One of the dealers had 4 galleries and now has none, but his art collection and contacts are extensive. He is in the area of lithographs which are signed and numbered. Now he is in somewhat of a retirement mode living in Northern Wisconsin.
I have tried to authenticate a painting by a Hudson River Valley Artist and made the mistake of going to a Phoenix art consultant who had been highly recommended by the Smithsonian, but the truth be told, she did not know the artist and sent a picture to someone else to use for the authentication.
The artist is Asher Brown Durand. When I first inquired of this person she told me that she could not do it from a photograph and would need to see the original work. I took it to her and she photographed it and then sent the photo to another art dealer.
I live in Arizona on a mountain top and do get to the East sometimes. We have family in Washington DC and have some events which we might be attending in the next couple of years.
Do you know of someone out here who could do this painting justice? It has been in the family since early 1900's and was found in an abandoned building in NYC by my grandfather.
Thank you, and I do not wish to impose, just see if you have any ideas.
