About Me
I'm one of those schizophrenic artists who couldn't make up his mind which art to focus on. I went to college on a fine arts scholarship, yet spent a lot of my time playing the guitar, writing songs and performing with a band. I won the KFC songwriting contest while in college, and no, I wasn't writing jingles about chicken. I also won a battle of the bands.

To support my artistic pursuits, I took time off from college and worked in the oil fields of Wyoming - not exactly intellectual work, but I did meet some interesting characters that I could draw upon in my writing. I also spent a few years with a dance group, touring Canada and Europe.

After receiving my English degree, I went to work as a technical writer for Thiokol, the manufacturer of space shuttle rocket boosters. Yes, they're the ones responsible for the 1986 Challenger disaster, but that was before I worked for them.

I later taught English in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Berkeley, California. During this time, I began focusing seriously on my writing.

Hi Joe. My guitar-playing son just learned to string his newest guitar and is looking to buy yet another pedal. There's so much more to playing guitar than I'd ever realized. He's brought some fun pieces home that he's written at college, and they're running around in my head. It's a shame he's only here for a few days though, then back to more English classes.

Your experience with the Nashville producer sounds familiar. I ran into a similar situation but, like you, I wasn't able to follow through because of the money (or lack of same). :-)

The music business is a tough one. Here's just one example. Do you happen to remember a song called "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" written by Danny O'Keefe? Danny used to live here in the Seattle area. A couple months after his recording of that song hit the charts I interviewed him for a music magazine that I started with a couple of friends. What he told me really took me by surprise. He said even with the tremendous success of that song (which ended up being covered by Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakum, and countless other artists) he could barely get any further interest in any of his other songs from anyone in Nashville. I think he eventually had one more song on the charts but it was a very minor success. So, as talented as he was and with a chart-topping song to his credit, he basically ended up as just another 1-hit wonder that just seemed to have faded into relative obscurity. But hey, at least got one! That's one more than I ever got! LOL!

Hey schizophrenic artist! I know the feeling! LOL!
Congrats on winning the song writing contest! As a fellow songwriter myself I know how great that must have felt. Man, the business end of the songwriting world is cut-throat, isn't it? Whew! The closest I came to having a song cut by a major artist was getting my demo tape as far as the desk drawer in Waylon Jennings' office where it probably still sits waiting patiently somewhere behind a box of paper clips. :-)
Thanks for the friend invite.

Sorry it took me so long to answer. I have been swamped and not keeping up on my websites. Okay...no I did not do the trailer on power point. I used Wiindows Movie Maker. Making it is easy, but finding the rightpictures and music is very difficult. At least it was for me. I've got one tip for you. Buy the biggest picture you can afford. If they are too small and they play the trailer in full screen, it looks terrible. Try to keep it around 2 or 2 1/2 minutes. Longer is boring. You just want to give them a taste so they are interested in buying the book. I am so sorry I haven't answered you before!
