About Me
I was born into a family of eccentrics and visionaries in Atlanta, Ga. and I'm a recent transplant to Southern California. I'm no stranger to the perverse working of the human mind. My education is in counseling and I was a local and national disaster volunteer for the American Red Cross for 7 years.

My heritage is an assortment of Saints and Sinners, my great-grandmother was the first matron for female prisoners in the State of Georgia and my grandmother spent much of her childhood in the Atlanta City Prison (called The Tower), going through three sets of iron gates each day to go to school. She told fortunes and predicted the future, skills she learned from the prisoners, and my mother was Snow White for the city of Atlanta when the Disney movie debuted. I'm used to a parade of unusual characters who made history each in his or her own way.
My Published Books or Favorite Books
My published novel, BEAUFORT FALLS, is a picture of humanity at its best, and worst, and sometimes its funniest. It's available online at all of the usual places, in selected bookstores and can be ordered from any bookstore.

The End of an Era

From my blog at:
http://mari-thewritersblock.blogspot.com/

I have a moderately boring life, but, like many people, I'm careful to follow my routine. For a while it was hectic, but with the slowing of the economy, I am finding one thing after another coming to an end. It's almost as if 2009 blasted in, with C H A N G E as its slogan, and nothing IS as it WAS. My schedule changed, eliminating the wonderful Westlake Library book group mid first Wednesday of each month. The same change meant that I… Continue

"Stir, Laugh, Repeat" by Martha A. Cheves, Southern Cooking with a Story!

Southern Cooking with a Story
Martha A. Cheves “Stir, Laugh, Repeat”

I’ve never met Martha Cheves in person, but I feel like I know her. In fact, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to come back as one of her “testers.” When she mentions her neighbor, who sometimes waits supper to see if Martha is cooking and might pop by with a sample, and states that the neighbor won’t share, I understand perfectly. I wouldn’t either. In fact, I may make sure that my husband and I pick her neigh… Continue

READ BEAUFORT FALLS --CHAPTER THREE

Carrie likes it, so I'll add another one. This is a short chapter. (Minor formatting changes from the original in order to make it "blog-friendly") :-)

Chapter Three

Way Out There

J. .D. reached under the thin blanket and pulled up the hemmed end of something that looked like part of the sheet. The flimsy gown wrapped around his neck tied with a cord and had no back, and he realized that he was still in the hospital.

Still here? No. Here again.

The walls blurred and the strip… Continue

READ BEAUFORT FALLS--CHAPTER TWO

And now, for Carrie ... :-)

From BEAUFORT FALLS (Some formating changes made in order to post in blog form.)

Chapter Two

Reap What You Sow

Molly glanced up from her position seated on the ground. Sweat rolled down her neck and she wanted to scratch her back, but her hands were covered with South Alabama’s red soil. The hot sun felt good on her arms and face, but it soon would be well into the nineties.

“Molly, how much longer?”

She looked over to the nearby garden fence where Tessie was s… Continue

READ BEAUFORT FALLS __ CHAPTER ONE

For Herminia ....

Here is Chapter One! (With the exception of some minor formatting changes to accommodate the blog format, this is how it reads in the published novel.)

Chapter One

Soup

Beaufort Falls was not exactly what you would call a “happening” town. It was east of Mobile, west of Panama City, south of Montgomery and north of the Gulf; in other words, right in the middle of the flattest part of Alabama. This was the country… Continue

Hi Mari,

Thanks Mari,
BTW ... My book Trailers were made by Ghost Writers. It was part of a special book review package by Apex Reviews. It cost $80 for both the review and the book trailer. Both turned out great I thought. I was real happy anyhow.
Get back with you soon, ok?
Have a great week.

Hi Mari,
Great book trailer! This looks like a great read. I'm looking forward to it.
Congratulations!
I write children's books, but I've been writing a thriller also for the past two years. Not quite ready to expose it yet. Stage fright I guess. LOL ...

Hi Mari,

Thanks for your comment! I see you're in Atlanta. I live in Villa Rica, 30 miles west. You certainly have interesting family stories to tell. Congrats on the book. It looks great.

I'm facinated by covers, how the author (or publishers) chose them - how they differ whether paperback or hardback or international release, etc...so interesting how the book is interpreted through artwork or photograph, etc.

Hello Mari,
I'm looking forward to Sunday chat as well. Also, I loved Chapter 2 of your book. If the rest of your book is as intersting as the first 2 chapters, I would say that you have a winner. Great job!
