Author and Artist
About Me
Born and bred in southwestern Ohio, I attended the University of
Cincinnati & Edison State Community College majoring in Fine
Arts and minoring in History. At a young age I dreamed of being a
comic book artist. This started a love of illustrative art which is
with me to this day. First concentrating on pastels and pen & ink,
I now work in the new and exciting medium of colored pencils. I
had the privilege of studying with two nationally known artists -
Janie Gildow and Ann Kullberg. Under the tutelage of these two
gracious ladies I gained experience in this relatively new medium
and developed my own style, which pays homage to both of theirs.

I teach classes in colored pencil on a drop-in basis at the Hayner
Cultural Center in Troy, OH. For information please email me
or call the center at 937.339.9457 I work in graphite, pastel, and
pen & ink as well. Mostly a realistic artist, I have stretched out
doing contemporary pieces for David Fair Designs & Winans
Candies employing gel & acrylics.

Other interests? I have many. I am a member of the Troy
Historical Society of Miami County, OH where I get to indulge
my keen interest in my Irish heritage and genealogy. I am a founding member of ‘Gallimaufry, a Writer’s Group’ also out of Miami
County. Currently I am publishing my own work and have created my own covers. My interests are fantasy and historicals. I also have great fun writing fan-fiction and started to creat a fan base in that way. Just google 'Marla Fair' and you'll get about 3 pages of info on me.

I am currently employed by the Ohio Historical Society as an Interpretive Guide, and lead the tours at the Johnston Farm House which was the home of John Johnston, Indian agent to the Miami, Shawnee, Wyandot and Seneca tribes of Ohio (among others) from 1809 – 1829. The house was built 1811 – 1815.
My Published Books or Favorite Books
To paraphrase a very wise author, Eric Sloane: The places and people in the following stories have been represented accurately to the best of my ability; yet my writing is supposed to be a tale, and as in any historical novel, my own imagination has blended with fact to create poetical reality.

COPPERHEAD - Indians were their enemies, so how could Miriam Foxwell, the daughter of a prosperous plantation owner in 18th century South Carolina fall in love with one? And could their love survive her father's hate? 'The novel's portraits of life in both Colonial America and 18th century England ring true.' Publisher's weekly. ISBN 978-1-4357-2938-4. 292 pages, $16.95 trade paperback.

Goodnight Robinson: A Tale of Love Across Time - Historic Interpreter Phoebe Greenway never imagined that her fascination with one of the former occupants of the 1800s home she worked in would change her destiny. One stormy night she is startled by a figure on the stair. Her pursuit of it teaches her the truth of the old adage, ‘Be careful what you wish for.' ISBN 978-1-4357-2975-9. 169 pages, $13.95 trade paperback

My French Rebel: Book One of The General's Daughter - Born to the family of a decorated British General, Charlotte Burington had it all. Or so it
seemed. She always knew something was missing, but never expected to find it in Colonial America - and in the arms of a French rebel! ISBN
978-1-4357-2977-3. 118 pages, $11.95 trade paperback

And coming in 2009:

The Flowering Thorn: Book Two of the General's Daughter - When her role as a spy for the Continental Army is discovered, love of her French rebel lands Charlotte Burington in Philadelphia's notorious Walnut Street prison. In the midst of war, between the battles of Brandywine and Barren Hill, can she be saved? ISBN 978-1-4357-5277-1. 256 pages, $13.95

Marla, thanks for the comment. I am an Oldham by marriage. My husbands family live in Walnut Ridge Arkansas. I met him in my home town in northern Illinois about 38 years ago. After doing some research for his family we found they came by way of Kentucky - North Carolina, New England and England. I've got a lot of paperwork on it. Your family must be there somewhere because the original John Oldham came from England in 1623 on the ship Anne with the Mayflower contingent of ships. Email me for some more info we can share.

Thanks for the suggestions. I kind of like "Rosie's Riveting Recipes" Catchy word plays do work. My publisher has another cookbook called "Potluck Survival Guide: the Care and Feeding of the Athletic Supporter." That book gets a lot of attention.

Thanks for stopping by. And yes, if you're going to be a writer, it helps to be a little "crazy."

Hi Marla,

Beautiful artwork!

I’m new here and I just wanted to stop by and say hello. If you get a free moment, stop by my page here, or at WRDF.

I keep hot, buttery-sweet cinnamon rolls on the cyber-table at all times—go ahead, grab two.

Have a great day and a successful year,

HI, Marla,

I write historicals. My first, Through Tempest Forged is set in the early stages of the American Revolution, in Virginia. I love historicals--they are my very favorite reads! It's great to meet you!

Marla--okay, here's the thing. I write Western Historical Romances--specifically Texas 1800's. I tried three NY pubs, and realized I did not write as they want--macho, macho men, who are always in charge and the little lady followed suit. Mine have flawed heroes, while at the same time, are strong and hard-willed--I guess I'd say sometimes they're a little clueless while being handsome and charming. So, I studied the e-pubs, made a list and checked it twice--actually I made a sort of spread sheet--and The Wild Rose Press came out on top. So, I polished my best one and submitted. Within 24 hours, I had a contract. (I now have five with them). Yes, many say the Western Historical is dead, and readers are looking for chick-lit, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters (never have figured out what that is.) BUT--I am stubborn and persistant and have since learned that romance readers still love the historical cowboy--and the contemporary cowboy, too. On The Wild Rose Press home page, their top ten best sellers has mine--ALL MY HOPES AND DREAMS--for the fifth week. Most of their releases never make the top ten. And if they do they stay maybe 2-3 three weeks, max. Mine has done very well.
I've been involved with three book signings--not mine because the print is not out yet--but I've taken my business cards and I make a hot pink flyer. Guess what? The majority of people look at the vampire, werewolf, well, you get the picture, but when they see my book cover and my cowboy, it's something they understand and reach for my stuff. I began my journey declaring the Western Romance is not dead. The NY pubs think so--but I don't. On Wild Rose, there are, I think, about a dozen "lines." The Western Historical line (the Cactus Rose) has only about 8 authors--the others have 20, 30, 40, 50. But guess what? The Cactus line is popular.
I also said in the previous e-mail that I write historicals that aren't true romance. they have a little love story in there, but it's not a romance novel. One is about a 16-year-old girl in North Texas in 1901 who become involved with a man accused of murder in a coal moining town nearby. The story is about the "coming of age" of a sixteen year-old girl. This kind of novel is difficult to place. Good luck--later--Celia Yeary

Marla--thanks for inviting me as your friend. Done. I love to meet other authors who write historicals. Right now, my focus is on Nineteenth Century Texas--the cowboy and romance! But I dabble in writing more historical than romance--so far, not much luck. But I'm still working on it. I love your art work--one of my wishes is to be an artist--but alas, I have zero talent. Later--Celia Yeary
