The original title for this blog post was “I Give Up,” but when I mentioned that to my significant other, John, he nixed it. He said I’m a positive person who has overcome adversity and embraces change, totally shaming me into taking a different slant on my topic. Until then, I was sounding like quite the curmudgeon in this post. Now, I feel much lighter. At least, I’m trying to feel more like the change-embracing woman John believes me to be.
The first thing I planned to gripe about was gramma…

Let me say one thing right up front: I think it's wonderful that there are so many opportunities on the Internet for readers to review novels they've read. I absolutely love being able to check out what other readers think about a book I want to buy. If most of the reviews of a certai…

Breaking the Silence will be reissued in December, and I thought you might like a sneak peek at the cover my publisher is working on for it. There's a lot going on in this story, as there usually is in my books: a mute little girl, an old woman with memory loss, a man a…

In the past twenty plus years of writing fiction, I've had plenty of time to ponder why I write about particular topics and revisit particular themes. I grew up a fearful person, something I'll post about at greater length one of these days. I think I've conquered most of my fears (wit…

There is a setting in my work-in-progress, The Lies We Told, that I need to name. You, my readers, have helped me name both books and characters in the past, so I'm turning to you once again for inspiration. If I use the name one of you suggests, I'll send you an autographed copy of The Courage Tree.
Here's the setting: Picture a backwoodsy area of coastal North Carolina. In real life, there's a (much nicer) area called Holland Shelter on a tributary of the Cape Fear River. I like the word Shel…

This blog disappeared earlier. It posted then promptly died... along with Mozilla and my blogger. Grrrr.
I can hardly believe it myself but this new story (the one that was going to be a short but has WAY too much plot) still has no name.
I'm not even a hundred percent sure it really is a before killerbyte story. No doubt that will work itself out as I write... but it NEEDS a name.
We have killerbyte, terrorbyte, exacabyte, Ethernet, and I'm working on Satellite (slowly kinda, when the mood g…

Author Cliff Ball draws on his considerable knowledge of history, folklore and Christianity to
craft a convincing retelling of humanity’s time on Earth.
Told mostly from the point of view of a newly sworn-in U.S. President, we learn that Earth
has existed under the shadow of secrets and lies for thousands of years. As Noah was
building his wooden ark to escape the flood, a highly developed race of people called
Terrans was designing starships and planning to leave the Earth entirely.
The Terra…

“That night, I dreamed of Mama’s flesh creaking as the doctor unstitched the trapdoor in her stomach.”
Step into the life of Hailey, a teenaged girl around 16 who will tell you about the Dirty Little Angels in a novel by Chris Tusa.
Most people would think Hailey’s just another teen girl, trying out new things, trying to find her own way. Her family would have probably been considered middle class, until her father lo…

I invited my friend and fellow author, Maureen Sherbondy, to post on my blog today. When I first moved to North Carolina, I continued my habit of writing at Starbucks. One day I noticed a beautiful woman sitting at a nearby table. She'd type a little, then stare into space, then type a little more. A fellow writer, I mused. Of course I was right. Turns out Maureen was (and still is) a poet. I was not "into" poetry, but when I read some of her work, that changed. She can write funny and she can w…
